the ground was icy and every time she put her foot down she would slip slightly. she would no doubt hurt herself before her personal practice was over. it had just been too long since she had been out there, in nature running like there was no tomorrow. thats how she liked to run best. it was almost as if normal running wasn't enough. it had to hurt to feel good. her feet slid against the ice one final time and she officially lost her balance. the ground came up to her and she landed on her chest. her lower back instantly started to ache. it was a paralyzing feeling, she couldn't move because all the nerves in her body were in shock. she breathed in the sharp air slowly, making her chest rise and fall smoothly and she was officially able to sit up. she moved her legs into a lengthy position, and leaned her hands back so that she was leaning against them. her breath was still sharp and she was just ready to stop hurting.

Eli knew better than to run when the ground was frozen the way it was, but he desperately needed the run. It helped him think, organize his thoughts. As long as he didn’t get hurt or sick, it wouldn’t matter, but if he did, well, his basketball coach would probably kill him. He turned onto his favorite trail. Most people didn’t know about it, so it was much slicker than the others he usually ran on. He saw a girl running a little ways up ahead of him, and even from this distance, he could practically see her feet sliding with each step. The sight made him thankful that he was heavy enough to sink into the icy ground and that he was wearing his spikes, both of which helped him keep his balance.
He looked behind him for a moment, and when he looked back, the girl was on the ground. He cursed quietly to himself, increasing his pace while still making sure he didn’t have a wipe-out either. She was sitting up by the time he reached her, and he went down on one knee beside her. “Hey, uh, you okay?” he asked, staying far enough away that the icy clouds formed from his breath didn’t go straight into her face. He’d brushed his teeth, but you never knew, what with the natural ability of men to stink. “You took quite the spill, there,” he added. All he really hoped was that she didn’t seriously hurt herself or go into shock or something.

she didn't even notice that someone was following her until she heard the crunching of ice from the distance up to her side. And even then, her head hurt way too much to even comprehend the idea of living things near her. She hadn't yet opened her eyes up but when she did all the aches and pains were intensifies and a shock was sent through her head. She was hurt for sure. And when she did open them, there was a pair of piercing blue eyes staring right into her. She felt exposed and mallory didn't know what to do about it. She froze at the idea of talking to this boy. This is what happened every time she tried to talk to someone who she didn't know. "I, uhm yeah. There's a lot of ice." she lifted her hand to point tithe uce and when she attempted to lift it up her wrist went limp and a sharp pain went through her left arm. She squeezed her eyes shut. Hoping that the boy wouldn't notice she was in pain. If no one knew, no one would ban her from running outside again or kick her off the dance team. She dud her best to bring her hand into her lap without showing favor to it.

He arched his eyebrows at her when she opened her eyes, cocking his head to the side a bit. She looked a bit dazed. He hadn’t seen her fall, but he was guessing it hadn’t exactly been a turn on the old Slip-N-Slide from the way she was acting. He was genuinely concerned for her well being, despite having no idea who she was. “Yeah, that ice, it’s a real mean one,” he joked, hoping she wouldn’t think he was making fun of her. His concern for her grew when she sort of winced when she tried to move. He knew how to tell when someone was hurt.
“So, uh, I’m sorry, but I don’t think I know your name…can you walk,” he asked, pausing for a moment before continuing, “or shall I carry you?” He felt pretty confident that he could carry her. He was in good shape, and she looked rather light. He just hoped she wasn’t too badly hurt. He hated seeing people in pain. He looked around them, hoping that someone might be coming up the trail. He didn’t really expect to see anyone, and he was right. He sighed quietly, looking back at the girl on the ground. At a second glance, he realized that she was quite attractive, despite her being in pain.

mallory wasn't very find of people, they didn't like her even though she tried so very hard to make them like her. She just wanted to fit in. She didn't want to be special, or super smart. She just wanted to be normal enough to be accepted into the status quo. But kids didn't want to be friends with the girl who couldn't talk without a stutter or move normally. This produced her fear of people and their touch. Would they hurt her, would they make her regret letting them come close? She never knew.
Mal could feel him getting antsy. He wanted to move, she could tell. It was on his posture and in his eyes. She didn't want to deny him that, so she opened her mouth once more. "my names Mallory and I'll be fine, really. You can um, go back to where you came from." she lifted her legs from off the ground and she stood up. Her legs still felt woolly and she didn't think she could walk. But she wouldn't show it, there was too much to loose. There was no way she would let him carry her. She could just tell that he was going to hurt her before he could help her. "see? I'm fine" she grunted out. Oh god, she just knew this wouldn't turn out well.

Eli shook his head slightly, smiling to himself. Some girls were so stubborn when it came to insisting that they didn’t need anyone’s help. It certainly made his job more difficult. He was a bit taken aback by her bluntness, but he brushed it off. He wasn’t about to give up on this girl. “Well, Mallory, I’m Eli, and I’m pretty sure you’re lying to me about being fine.” His hand twitched to help her up, but he stopped himself, figuring that she’d probably just ignore it.
He chuckled at her supposed ‘proof’ that she was fine. He stood, folding his arms across his stomach. “Well, even though you’re so adamant about being okay, may I at least walk you back to the school? Because I’d feel downright awful if I were to find out later that something had happened to you.” Now they were playing a game of endurance – who would give in to the other first? At least he had refrained from calling her pretty so far; he figured she would probably find enough ‘fine’ in her to slap him for that. “Please?” he added, so that it seemed at least a bit more like he was giving her an option in this (which he wasn’t). Even if she rejected his offer, he wouldn’t give up that easily.

her feet send waves of shocks up her legs making her question if she should even be standing. It was probably just bruises. She was sure of it, there was no possible way that anything was broken. That would just break her heart. She smiled at his introduction, he was cute in a bit of an overbearing brother way. He seemed genuinely concerned about her. When he stuck his hand out to her she flinched slightly and bent her body a centimeter the opposite direction. Picking up her cool she defended herself. "we'll then Eli, if I'm not alright how come I can do this?" she smirked and pulled her feet up so that she was standing on her toes. The rock under her feet made her balance that much more off. She was in pain, and a lot of it. But the denial and shock kept her from crying out on pain. She was determined to be okay. Once she felt stable on her toes she spun in a circle, moving in a circle around the axis that was her left leg. She wobbled around the third turn and she felt herself falling even before she actually did. Her ankle gave out on her and she landed, yet again, on her bum. She braced herself with her hands, breaking her fall with a sharp pain gain going down her left arm. She was messed up from head to toe. Maybe she should go home after all. She gave her she cheekiest grin looked up at the boy. "it was worth a try." she shrugged her shoulders, giving up on looking strong. She pulled her arm into her lap, cradling it relieving it from a slim amount of pressure.

The girl managed to stand up on her own, but she looked pretty unstable. Maybe he was over-examining it, plenty of people face-planted on ice, but he still wasn’t about to just leave her here when he wasn’t absolutely positive that she was okay. Eli just felt a bit accomplished for getting a smile out of her. He took a step back, eyebrows arched, as she began to go onto her toes as a way of proving that she was okay. He had a feeling that it wasn’t going to end well, especially when she started turning. He saw her begin to wobble and tried to catch her, but she fell too fast for him. He was back on the ground beside her instantly. He looked her square in the face, before speaking slowly and clearly to her. “You are hurt. I don’t care what you say, you are hurt. And I am going to help you no matter what you say. You can beat me up for all I care, but I’m not leaving you until you are in the hands of a medical professional, in this case, the school nurse.” He paused for a moment to take a deep breath and to try to gauge her response so far. “Now, I’m not going to force you to let me carry you, but if you start going wobbily on me, you’re done. And you have definitely done something to your arm. I appreciate the fact that you don’t want to seem weak, but you’re seriously hurt.” He knew he was being a bit repetitive, but maybe it would help him to get through to her.
He sat back on his heels, waiting for her answer. She was currently cradling her arm in her lap, obviously beginning to accept the fact that she was hurt. He hated that she had to fall twice to realize it, but if it made his job any easier, well, so be it. He cleared his throat and shook his head back and forth quickly, trying to get some feeling back in his cheeks. He rested his forearms on his bare knees. No matter how cold it was, he couldn’t bring himself to run in pants. It just felt wrong to him.

Maybe it was his persistence, or maybe it was just the kind face he had, but mallory felt like she had to give humanity another chance at accepting her into its grasp. Her limp arm still hugging her chest, she offered the boy her other hand. She coul at least let him help her up, seeing as she couldn't do it alone. By her own assessment, mal had a broken bone in her left arm and a sprain in her ankle. Plus a throbbing bruise on her rib cage that made her breathing twice as hard as normal. It didn't look like he would be running at least until the next season started in spring. It wasn't to Mallory's surprise that she got hurt. There always seemed to be something stopping her from doing what she loved. Whether it be he egotistical father that wants her to do nothing but study and work extra hard to bcome something she never will be, or some random act of god. It seemed that the two all mighty people wanted her to stay away from what she loved, and that wasn't going to happen. She was going to push on through. "you know, you sound like my father. I never have a choice in what I do with him either." she squinted through the smog covered sun and up at the boy. The ground was cold and icy making her pants freeze to her legs and her sweat turn into ice drops on her back. She was almost desperate to warm up. All she needed was a nice mug of cocoa and she would be set.

He smiled warmly at her, seeing her finally giving in and accepting his aid. He grasped the hand she offered him, gently helping her to her feet. Her other arm didn’t look too good, and he supposed he would find out about anything else she’d hurt soon enough. “Okay, if anything starts hurting too badly, just squeeze my arm or make a noise or something,” he said, offering his arm for her to hold onto as they walked. “If worse comes to worst, I can always run back to the school and bring the nurse to you.” He realized he was probably being a little protective and over-bearing of this girl, but he just couldn’t help it for some reason. Eli felt a strong need to help her back to the school.
At her comment about him being like her father, he looked away a bit, chewing on his lip. The way she had said it didn’t sound very friendly. “I-I’m sorry…I didn’t mean to sound so demanding. I mean, I suppose if you’re so hell-bent on getting back on your own, I could leave…” he responded innocently, looking away from her so she wouldn’t see his somewhat crestfallen expression. He didn’t want her to feel obligated to do something she didn’t want to do. All he wanted was for her to be safe and happy. Sometimes he felt like he was the only one with happy parents that he was happy with; he didn’t really understand what those kinds of problems were like. Sure, he disagreed with them, especially his mom, but they had never tried to force him into things. He shook his shoulders out, looking back at her while trying to keep a nonchalant expression.

the ground was still slick, as if she had thought that it would have melted in the few minutes that she had been on the ground. she limped her way toward the school building, off of the path she had worked so hard to get so far on. it was a path she hadn't been on before today and it looked pretty easy. a little overgrown with weeds and rocks, but it was nothing like the cross country course she ran in the summer. that was intense as it got in Michigan. "thanks. um, thanks a lot." she started gushing at the worries in his voice. he really didn't want to harm her in any way, shape, or form. and that in its self made her like him that much more. her stride widened for a moment so she could catch up to his quick legs. "i really appreciate it. i don't think i'd be able to make it back safely without you." her face formed a smile that broadened with each word. for some reason she felt really giddy and ready for life to happen to her.

He helped her along the path, trying not to go too quickly for what she was capable of doing. He stepped carefully on the slick ice, making sure he heard a definite crunch before picking up his second foot. “Oh, uh, you’re welcome,” he said awkwardly, his cheeks turning a tinge pink. If she noticed, he’d write it off as being from the cold. He felt her stride widen, and he automatically slowed his. He didn’t want her to try to push herself too hard when she was so hurt. He looked down at her as they maneuvered their way back down the trail. Occasionally he led her over to one side or the other where it was noticeably less slick. No need for another spill before the school was even in sight.
“Don’t worry about it; it’s not a problem, really.” He smiled softly, looking up at the sky through the branches. All he could think about was how it would make such a nice painting. Next thing he knew, he was sliding on a patch of ice. He instinctively dropped her arm and stuck both of his out to steady himself. Once he was sure he was stable, he looped his arm back through hers, apologizing for pretty much everything from his slip to the existence of stupid guys that weren’t worth anyone’s time. He had no idea what was so different about this girl. He never got so flustered around other people. Well, she was definitely something different.

Mallory could feel her face turn into a salmony pink colour. it spread from cheek to cheek and made her feel like a little girl. she never blushed. blushing was something you do when you're nervous or you've done something stupid. oh right, she had done both of those things within the last ten minutes. she hoped that Eli wouldn't see her face this colour. she was reddening just thinking about it. why wouldn't it stop? she noticed all the precautions he took with her, like walking slow and creating soft spots for her to walk in. she followed his steps carefully, making for certain that she wan't going to make a fool of herself again. she was much too prideful for that to happen. if she did fall again, she was sure she would just roll away and die of embarrassment.
it really was sweet what he was doing for her, and she didn't think he understood. they were about a half mile away from the school by now and she felt like she had to do something to thank him properly. maybe she could bake him cookies, or write him a thank you note. but no, those sounded like terrible idea. she wan't in primary school anymore. she was a big girl and anyone in their right mind kept their kindness to themselves. she had to think what she was going to do for him. why was this so hard? she thought. he seemed like a simple enough guy. the answer was for sure right in front of her. but what? without even thinking she lifted her heels so that she was the same height as him and she gave him a quick kiss on the cheek. nothing special or crazy, just a peck. instantly regretting it, she begged for her forgiveness and retreated a few half steps "sorry, i didn't mean..." she mumbled under her breath.

Eli felt her lips touch his cheek, and his face was scarlet in an instant. He looked away from her to hide the redness, the tips of his ears burning. He wasn’t exactly embarrassed; it was just extremely unexpected. He’d never spoken to this girl before today, even though he was pretty sure he had seen her somewhere else quite often. He just couldn’t quite place it. “Oh, um…it’s fine. Don’t worry about it,” he said after waiting a minute for the blush to go away. His cheeks were still a bit pink, but he could put that off on it being so cold outside. He moved to take her arm again, which he had dropped in his embarrassment. “Promise, he added after another moment of silence. He resumed his slow, careful pace. Eli figured that the more he acted like it was no big deal the less she would be embarrassed for doing it.
He was just beginning to think that he would never be able to place where he knew her from when it hit him. “So…you run cross country, right?” he asked, despite already knowing the answer (who else would be out running on such a cold, dreary morning?). He just wanted to change the subject for her sake. He could tell she extremely embarrassed by what she’d done. Sure, it was an odd way of saying “Thank you,” but he wasn’t going to freak out on her for it. It wasn’t like he had anyone that was going to get mad at him for it – Eli had never had a girlfriend. He didn’t know if she had a boyfriend, but he was really hoping she didn’t. Or at least, if she did, that she would have the sense not to mention what had happened to him. Eli didn’t like coming between people.
