She didn’t know what the point of school was now that she didn’t have cheerleading to look forward to. She had joined dance and glee club, hoping that they would help with the missing feeling, but it just wasn’t the same. She just didn’t feel like she belonged quite yet, and it made her uncomfortable to be there. She knew it was only a matter of time that those advisors looked at her grades and kicked her out too. She really didn’t know what she was going to do if that was the case. She needed something to belong to, she just wanted to fit in somewhere.
During math class that day, an announcement had been made about joining the mathletes. They were looking for some more members to compete. Codie had no intentions of joining, she knew that it was social suicide, even though she wasn’t popular anymore. Sitting in class, Codie couldn’t help but daydream that she was back on the squad. Tumbling, cheering, dancing, performing, it was what she loved doing, she just couldn’t wait to be back. The only way she knew how though was to bring her grades up.
The problem with her mind is it doesn’t work the same way as ‘normal’ students. She actually brings ditzy cheerleader to life. There was this one time in Geography class that the teacher asked for the capital of Ohio. Codie’s arm shot up in the air and with a bright smile she replied ”O.” The class erupted into laughter and Codie couldn’t put two and two together as to what was so funny.
When the bell rang for the school day to be over, Codie packed up her bag and was on her way out the door when the teacher called her to the desk. Explaining that he/she impressed with Codie’s ability in math and that she had a bright future ahead of her, she began to push the mathletes on her again. Explaining that not only would she get extra credit in math class, that he/she would be willing to help her with other subjects to bring her grades up. Reluctantly, Codie agreed to give it a shot. She figured maybe it would help her get back on the cheer squad.
Heading down to the room the mathletes met in, she peeked through the window to see a group of nerds. She had no idea how she was going to fit into this group at all. Opening up the door to the room she quietly and shyly asked, without making any direct eye contact, ”Is this the right place for the mathletes?”

The final bell had just ringed, indicating the end of the day’s courses, and Aaron was still poring over a textbook in Classroom 103. Aaron Feigenbaum, a student who was oddly studious for his age, was rewarded for his efforts with an independent study in applied mathematics… Most teens would probably consider this a punishment, but this bespectacled boy thoroughly enjoyed investigating the practical purposes of modern mathematics.
While proofing a formula for a recent statistical analysis in reference to the effectiveness of nicotine gum, Aaron felt a buzzing in his pant’s pocket. Clumsily, he pulled out his iPhone, and realized from the flashing numbers that the bi-weekly Mathletes afterschool meeting was about to commence in the neighboring classroom.
Stumbling about with his lanky limbs, Aaron managed to close his laptop and shove his textbooks and random writing utensils into his nifty military sack. He was on the move.
Aaron checked his wristwatch: It had taken him approximately fifteen seconds to arrive at Classroom 102, which was not a record time, but it was still an achievement.
“Everyone, stop what you’re doing, look here!” Aaron exclaimed, placing his hands on his hips and holding his chin up high, “Aaron Feigenbaum has arrived.” The teen then broke his superman stance, laughed with his fellow club members and exchanged high-fives.
Classroom 102 was safe haven for the geeks of Mayview—It was social suicide to join the Mathletes, thank you Mean Girls, and therefore none of the jocks ever bothered to step inside. It was a small, unsupervised space where nerds could be nerds and their enthusiasm about learning could be celebrated rather than ridiculed.
“Shall we proceed?” The president of the club announced, clearing his throat as a stack of papers hid his face. The senior student continued to drone on about the competition schedule this year, players to watch out for, fundraising events…
Aaron felt his attention beginning to wander until the door suddenly creaked open and a heavenly creature stepped inside. “Is this the right place for the mathletes?” she questioned shyly, clearly uncomfortable and outside of her element.
Most of the team members maintained an awkward silence, convinced that Codie’s present was some type of cruel joke. However, before any student had the opportunity to accuse the sweet blonde of being deceitful, Aaron took the floor and extended his hand, “Yes, this is the mathletes.” He grinned, shaking her hand and raising an eyebrow, “You may have heard of me, Aaron Feigenbaum.”
Aaron hoped his forwardness wouldn’t fall flat, but there was no way of telling how a pretty girl would respond to his jokes—It’s not like he had many opportunities to converse with ‘the beautiful people’.

Codie had no idea what she was even doing in the room with the mathletes. She knew she was never going to fit in this crowd, the same would have gone for any of them being thrown out on the football field. Deciding to look up at the group, she couldn’t tell if she was more scared of them, or them of her. When the one walked up to her and extended his hand and introduced himself, she raised an eyebrow at him. Was he serious?
Extending her own hand, she shook his hand and simultaneously shook her head ‘no’. ”No, I haven’t heard of you Aaron, should I of?” She was a bit confused by his introduction, she didn’t quite fully understand the minds of the nerds, she barely understood her own mind most of the time.
Moving forward into the room, Codie felt like she wanted run, she was starting to feel uncomfortable, but she really want to bring her grades up, and this was the only way she knew how. Taking a seat next to Aaron, Codie looked up at the whiteboard and the long math problem that had been written on it. (4!+8)/4 + (2+3*4)^2 - 3^4 + (9+10)(15-21) + 7(17-15) = X. Studying it for a minute, she knew it was just basic algebra calculations, so she blurted out, ”23. X=23.” She wasn’t quite sure if the problem was left over from a class before them, they were just goofing off, or if now she just looked like a bigger idiot in front of them. Biting her lip, she looked around the room at the guys, still trying to figure out just what to do.
Letting out a sigh, there was only one thing to really do. Just ask. ”Okay, so I have no idea what you guys even do here. I was told that I should join since I’m good with math, and since I have nothing else going for me, I figured I might as well give it a shot. So now, will someone please explain to me why there is basic algebra on the board, and what the plan is.”
Releasing the air that she had taken in, Codie’s ramble had finally ended. She was nervous, uncomfortable, and somewhat annoyed of her situation, and the only thing she could think of involved her talking, resulting in her rambling. Biting her lip once again, she grew shy, looking around, her eyes stopped on Aaron, no one seemed to talk to her except him. She began to wonder if anyone else had even ever talked to a girl before.

=Aaron was relieved when Codie accepted his hand; he may have been more than a little worried that the pretty blonde would recoil from his touch in absolute revulsion. Although, the fact that that teenage boy was being playful seemed to go completely over this girl’s head—Codie seemed confused as she responded to the boy’s introduction shyly, ”No, I haven’t heard of you Aaron, should I of?” |
The bespectacled teen smirked, somewhat enamored by the girl’s naïveté, but instead of responding in patronizing fashion, he simply shrugged and replied, ”No, don’t worry about it, I’m just a goof.” He didn’t want to make the poor girl any more nervous—She already looked as though she was about to vomit. This was strange though, considering that the math geeks in this room rarely had this effect on anyone, let alone a beautiful girl… Codie may not be considered ‘popular’ anymore in public opinion, but to these guys, she was practically the prom queen. As the meeting pressed onward, Codie ended up taking a seat next to Aaron, and she appeared to be writing frantically in her notebook. The teen glanced over and realized she had copied the lengthy problem on the whiteboard, and was solving it rather quickly, which had actually surprised the teen, especially when he realized that she was solving the problem correctly. Although, no one was prepared for when the blonde blurted out the answer as the captain of the mathletes was still at the front of the room, lecturing the team about the booster club and some other nonsense. Before anyone had the time to respond, Codie opened her mouth again, but this time began to ramble nervously as she felt completely out of place, ”Okay, so I have no idea what you guys even do here. I was told that I should join since I’m good with math, and since I have nothing else going for me, I figured I might as well give it a shot. So now, will someone please explain to me why there is basic algebra on the board, and what the plan is.” Aaron waited politely for the captain to respond, but when the senior seemed completely dumbstruck, he turned toward the former cheerleader and spoke to her calmly, feeling sorry that she was in such a compromising position with her academic standing. ”Okay, well, for starters, we do math here. We perform tasks ranging from Algebra II to Advanced Calculus, and then we compete in math competitions at a national level, representing Mayview.” Aaron leaned in closer, lowering his voice so that only Codie could hear him, ”Not everyone here is going to make the competition team, so we have spend some of our time prepping guys, or girls, so that they stand a chance of making it.” The teen then drew further away, raising his voice again so that the other students could hear, ”And the plan is, we will cram as many practice problems as possible until try-outs next week!” Aaron gave her a subtle wink, as if to let Codie know that she was definitely going to make the team, ”And back to you el capitain-ey!”[/div]

Looking around the room, she could only see the blank stares from the guys, she was really beginning to think they were scared to talk to girls. Finally hearing Aaron talk again, she looked over at him, figuring that he was going to the be the only one to save her in this group. ”Okay, well, for starters, we do math here. We perform tasks ranging from Algebra II to Advanced Calculus, and then we compete in math competitions at a national level, representing Mayview.” When she saw him lean in closer, she leaned in somewhat, but still kept her distance, just enough to hear, ”Not everyone here is going to make the competition team, so we have spend some of our time prepping guys, or girls, so that they stand a chance of making it.”
She was starting to understand what was going on. She got that there was a team and they competed against other schools, but what she was still foggy on was how they practiced/prepared. It didn’t make sense to her that they would just sit there and do math problems. That’s what homework was for. There had to be a better way, some sort of game or physical activity they could do. Smiling friendly at Aaron, saying ‘thank you’ for his explanation, she began to relax in her seat when she saw him wink at her. Stiffening up she moved slightly away from him, not understanding that it was a friendly/you’ll make the team wink, and thinking it was more of an I want in your pants kind of wink. Her cheeks went beet red, not really knowing how to respond, so she did what she did best. Ignored it for the rest of the meeting.
She was relieved when the meeting was over and nearly everyone was out of the room. She had purposely been packing her things up slowly, she didn’t want to be the first one to leave, that made her look like she didn’t want to be there, but she also didn’t want to leave with the group of guys, she knew that would damage her reputation more than it already was. This way being one of the last to leave she didn’t have to worry so much. Noticing that Aaron was still in the room, she began to feel bad for her reaction to the wink. She didn’t want to be rude, afterall she had just met him, trying to smile friendly at him, she asked, ”So is this most of their first times being in a room with a girl or something? Are the guys from the other teams that speechless around girls too? Because that could be a major bonus for us.”

Aaron was acutely aware of Codie’s feelings of discomfort, and he realized that this might be the girl’s first experience as an outsider. Understanding what it was like to have a perpetual outsider status, the boy sympathized, deciding to stick around to speak with her once the meeting was concluded. Fortunately, this session was cut short; tonight was the season finale of The Walking Dead, and none of the nerds were willing to miss it.
As the other boys began to file out of the room, they took their amassment of poorly fitted trousers and bad haircuts with them. Soon the classroom fell quiet, and Aaron finally had a chance to be alone with this beautiful blonde cheerleader-turned-mathematician. She had an adorable smile, even if it was followed with a somewhat convoluted rambling, ”So is this most of their first times being in a room with a girl or something? Are the guys from the other teams that speechless around girls too? Because that could be a major bonus for us.” |
”Slow down!” the boy joked, gesturing with his hands to imply that the poor girl should relax a bit and take a deep breath. ”First of all, yes, this is the first time a girl has entered the Mathletes meeting, although I would hazard a guess that they have encountered women before in their lives, yes.” He chuckled a bit realizing that the deceptively ditzy blonde had proved a valid point, ”This is true; you would be a valuable asset for your ability to render nerds speechless.” Aaron tilted his head to the side, adjusting his glasses before leaning in closer, ”But you underestimate yourself. You’d be a valuable team member because you’re awesome with numbers.” The teenager realized that Codie had probably been put down in the past for seeming gullible and dumb, but clearly that was far from the truth; she should understand that she is a smart girl, and that there is such a thing as a girl with brains and beauty. ”Even if you’re having trouble with other subjects, I’d be more than happy to help you get your grades back up.” Aaron confessed, stepping back to allow the girl some room to stand up from her desk, ”You’d get a spot back on the cheer squad, but more importantly, you’d have the pleasure of spending your afternoons studying with me. Aaron snorted, gathering up his text books, ”Sounds like a win-win to me!”[/div]

No, that would just defy all logic in her book, and nerd wasn’t really her style. She preferred the bad boy types, but they always seemed to get her into trouble. She knew that she should just relax and go with the flow, but she was having trouble. It was almost as if she wanted to fit in somewhere so bad that she would do whatever it took, but her mind was trying to convince her that was social suicide, so she was working against herself. It was a lose-lose situation for herself. Unless, she could find a good reason to join.
When Aaron started talking about helping her get her grades up in her other subjects, she looked up at him with sad puppy dog eyes. It would be nice to get her grades up, and get back on the cheerleading squad, but she didn’t want anyone to know just how bad she was failing. In history for example, out of a possible 300 points for the midterm, she scored a 5. 10 of those points were for putting your name on the paper correctly, something she managed to mess up. There was no way that she was ever going to pass her classes.
Standing up quickly she grabbed her books, clinging them close to her as she looked over at Aaron. ”I’m doing fine in my classes. I don’t need help, I’m not stupid.” Turning around quickly, flipping her hair as she did, so she didn’t have to look at the poor boy who was just trying to be friendly, she could feel a few tears escape from her eyes. She didn’t know why she was being so short and mean to him. He was being so kind, and here she was being a typical ‘cheerleader’ to him. Sniffling and wiping her eyes, she turned back to the boy after taking a deep breath. ”I’m sorry, that was really mean of me, I suppose you were just trying to be nice. Can I make it up to you? Maybe we can go get some hot chocolate and start over?”

Aaron was bewildered as to why Codie seemed so flustered around him; he had trouble understanding the emotional processes of both ordinary and geeky girls, so attempting to comprehend the desires of a popular girl was three times as daunting. Social hierarchy was a language this mathletes was completely unfamiliar with, so if that’s what the pretty blonde was concerned with, there was no way he would be able to help her with that. Aaron adjusted his glasses, casually observing the situation he was when the girl suddenly sprang up from her seat and started collecting her books, ”I’m doing fine in my classes. I don’t need help. I’m not stupid.” |
The scrawny teen was completely caught off guard, his eyes widened in shock as he began to follow the cheerleader out the door, concerned for her and afraid that he had done something wrong. Aaron didn’t think that Codie was stupid at all, and he was genuinely upset that she thought that was his meaning earlier. Before he could even begin to apologize, she turned around and began to explain herself, ”I’m sorry, that was really mean of me, I suppose you were just trying to be nice. Can I make it up to you? Maybe we can go get some hot chocolate and start over?” Aaron’s ears had flushed bright red; this was the first time that girl, and not just any girl, a gorgeous girl, had invited him to go anywhere. Attempting not to stutter or essentially do anything geeky that would cause Codie to retract her previous offer, he responded with enthusiasm, ”There’s no need to apologize, I shouldn’t have been so pushy about it… Although, it would still be my pleasure to get a hot chocolate with you, fair maiden.” Fuck, he just couldn’t manage to behave like a socially acceptable human being. The bespectacled teen smiled awkwardly, pulling his textbooks into his backpack, hoping that he wouldn’t scare the girl away; this all seemed to good to be true, and he didn’t want to blow his chances of at least being friends. Thus, he waited patiently for her response, hoping for the best but expecting the worst. [/div]

He was just trying to be nice, she realized it, but yet it was hard to break old habits. She was coming to terms that she would never be popular again, and that was okay, she would find somewhere in the middle to fit in. She was only a junior afterall. Hoping that Aaron would accept her offer, she began to have doubts. What if people saw them together? She knew what people would say, people were often cruel around the school, especially the populars. It was too late to take back her offer though, Aaron had already accepted, and she wasn’t going to be cruel again. When he said fair maiden she couldn’t help but let out a giggle. It had reminded her of a tv show she watched in secret. Merlin. She knew that her ‘ex-friends’ wouldn’t have approved of some of the things she watched, or dreamed of watching, but the story of King Arthur, Merlin, and Gwen, interested her, and she thought Merlin was so cute with his scrawny awkward self. Oh if only she could let her geek flag fly, but she couldn’t. Well at least not yet.
Curtseying to Aaron, she bowed her head down to him, and smiled. She was glad that there was a still a closed door, and that it was after school. There wouldn’t be too many people out in the halls, and most of the jocks/populars would be at their practices. She figured and hoped that it would be okay for them to walk out together and not hear tons of whispers. Opening up the door to the hallway, she quickly looked around and was glad to not see anyone, looking back, she smiled, waiting for Aaron to join her on the walk to the coffee shop. She had a feeling that she was going to get along really well with Aaron, she just hoped that she could break her old habits.
Walking outside to the coffee shop she looked over at Aaron and asked a controversial topic, hoping that she could catch him off guard and get him talking. ”Okay. Which is better, Star Trek or Star Wars?”

Surprisingly, instead of patronizing him, the blonde offered both a courtesy and a bow in a classic medieval fashion. Needless to say, the young Mr. Feigenbaum was stunned, and all he could think about was how desperately he wanted to brag to Eli about this serendipitous encounter.
Gladly following the girl’s lead, Aaron slung his backpack over his shoulders and followed her out the door, strolling down the empty hallways as they made their way to the local coffee shop. ”Okay, which is better, Star Trek or Star Wars?” |
Codie asked unexpectedly, perhaps not knowing the weight of such an inquiry. Aaron stopped dead in his tracks for a moment, taking time to regain his composure before continuing to walk as he attempted to grapple with this age-old conundrum, ”Well, both series are excellent in their own right…” he began diplomatically, adjusting his glasses as he spoke. ”But,” he interjected, his tone taking a more serious turn, ”I’d have to stick to my roots and say Star Trek.” Aaron sighed, relieved by this admission, although he felt the compulsive need to support his decision, ”Star Trek has been around longer and has more believable plot with richer writing—Additionally, Star Trek has Yeoman Janice Rand… my first crush.” Aaron began to stutter, realizing that he had revealed way too much information; he had only known Codie for just over an hour! Attempting to cover up his social faux pas, the teen spoke abruptly, turning the attention back toward his new friend as he asked her the same question, ”What about you—Star Trek or Star Wars?” Aaron couldn’t wait to arrive at the coffee shop; at least then he would have hot chocolate to shove into his mouth, rather than his foot. Codie walked along with Aaron, allowing him to talk about Star Wars and Star Trek. She smiled, not commenting, just listening, as they walked. She blinked as he turned the question around on her. She wanted to admit that she loved them both, but by admitting it out loud, she was also admitting to be a nerd, something she was not quite ready to do. Biting her lip she looked over at Aaron, "Oh, I don't really like either, i'm more into comedies and chick flicks."
Turning away, she wasn't quite sure of what else to say to the boy. Thinking, she didn't want the awkward silence to get weird between them, she figured there had to be something that they had in common besides math, that she could admit to liking without the fear of judgement. She figured that they boy wouldn't judge her, but she had only just met him, she wasn't about to trust him, yet. "So...besides math, what else do you do after school?"
