She knew she was short and a bit different, but she didnt care. She knew who her friends were and she was happy not being one of the 'popular' kids. Standing at her own locker, minding her own business, Ella was putting her books away getting ready to meet her friends for lunch. She had heard some commotion down the hallway and figured the bigger kids were coming her way. She moved as quickily as she could to avoid any trouble. But it was too late. Trouble had found her, and it was in the form of the bully Francis.
She felt herself being picked up by the back of her shirt and was soon staring him in the eye. "Hello, Francis" Ella said with a snotty tone, knowing that he had hated his name which is why everyone called him Frankie. Ella was not in a mood today to be picked on. When she found herself being tossed into the trash can she quickly popped back out, throwing whatever garbage she could at Francis. "Come back here and fight you stupid coward."

Sam sat down at her usual table in the cafeteria, salad and orange juice in hand. She greeted her friends, not so cheerfully as usual, and took a mouthful of her salad. She wasn't in the best mood; her insomnia had been worse than ever this week, and she hadn't slept a wink the night before. She had tossed and turned, and it had been no use, she just hadn't managed to get to sleep at all, and that always made her irritated and crabby. She was playing around with her salad moodily, staring into space, not really thinking about anything, when she suddenly heard a crash. She jumped and looked up to see that some moron - Francis, was it? - had tossed a small girl into the trash. Sam recognized the girl; it was the same one she was planning to interview for the newspaper. Ella, her name was. Sam had spoken to her once or twice, but all she really knew about her was her name, the weird Disney obsession she seemed to have, and the fact that she was the only female in the football team.
That was it. Sam couldn't bear bullies at the best of times, let alone in a bad mood after a sleepless night. She grabbed her salad and juice and marched over to Ella and Francis. Ella was now kicking the bully between the legs, but the other boy was huge. Sam felt the girl was going to get practically murdered if she didn't interfere. She walked over to them and tapped Francis on the shoulder. He turned around and, with a bored expression, she promptly tossed the salad over his head, followed by the orange juice. The cafeteria went silent as the boy stood there in shock for a few minutes, his thick brain trying to process what had just happened.
"I understand you must have a lot of severe childhood traumas, but that's no reason to take it out on other people. I suggest you seek professional help" she said calmly. Then she turned around and walked back towards her table, as if nothing had happened, waiting for the bully to react.

Watching Francis turn and leave, she knew that this wasn’t the last she’d see of him. She had a feeling the next encounter would be twice as bad due to the incidents that had just happened. She knew that she should be thankful toward the other girl, but she didn’t want to come across as weak. She was on the football team afterall, she wanted to be a badass, and that wasn’t going to happen as long as people kept rescuing her. She had to start taking control.
She knew that if she marched up the other girl and her group of friends, she’d be walking into their zone, she needed to even the playing field and somehow get the girl without her friends. But how to do that was the question. Looking around she noticed that it was meatloaf day in the cafeteria. Despising the meat, she wrinkled her nose as she picked up a strangers piece and chucked it at the back of the girls head. Yelling across the cafeteria at the girl, ”Who do you think you are? I don’t need your help fighting my battles!” she picked up a handful of mashed potatoes that soon followed the meatloaf, hitting the girl. Wanting to get everyone distracted, she then yelled, ”FOOD FIGHT!” watching the chaos begin.

Sam smirked to herself as she saw Francis turn round and leave, spluttering and swearing. With bullies like him, you had to be calm and composed. Sam had studied enough psychology to know that people like him were just insecure, wretched people who tried to make themselves feel bigger by picking on weaker people than themselves. She despised him for being such a bully, but pitied him at the same time; who knew what might be going on inside his subconscious mind. She looked at her friends, who were laughing uncontrollably.
”Who do you think you are? I don’t need your help fighting my battles!” She heard ella scream at her. That made them laugh even more. Sam rolled her eyes, snorting, and turned around, her eyebrows raised and her signature smirk on her face. Jesus Christ. ‘My battles’.
“Oh I’m sorry, I didn’t realize you were practicing for the professional midget wrestling club. Silly me”.
The words were out of her mouth before she could stop them, and she immediately regretted them. There she was, complaining about bullies in her head, when she was almost just as bad with her words. She was about to turn around and apologize when at that very moment, she felt a sharp thud at the back of her head. Her friends were now loyally trying not to laugh, but failing miserably. Sam turned around and looked down at the floor to see what had been thrown at her. Her expression immediately turned to one of disgust as she saw the meatloaf. She suddenly felt sick, imagining the poor animal that had died just to be made into food that would never even be eaten, but merely thrown at the back of her head.
She looked up and her disgusted expression turned into an amused one as she saw the whole cafeteria had now begun a huge food fight. That kid was a riot, all right. Without thinking twice, she took hold of her friend’s salad, ignoring her protests, and threw it at Ella.
"OK, here's the deal: no meat, just vegetables. I don't want some poor animal to have died for nothing" she called out at the younger girl, smirking as she walked closer to her. "Sorry about the midget thing. How about we fight it out?" she asked, grabbing a potato and tossing it menacingly from hand to hand. She felt she had to straighten things out between them if she ever wanted to write that article; plus, she really did feel bad about what she had said.

She was grabbing whatever she could and chucking it in the air, not caring who she was hitting at this point. Feeling a salad hit her in the face, she looked up at the girl she had originally started the food fight for. She listened as she said no meat, just veggies and Ella smirked. She figured that girl was a vegetarian, not that there was anything wrong with that, but Ella just felt different. She enjoyed meat, figuring that the animals were already dead so she might as well not the food go to waste. Even if they weren’t going to eat it, at least they would get to have fun with it. She watched as the girl tossed a potato from hand to hand and a grin grew across Ella’s face as she picked up a slimy piece of mystery meat.
”Sorry, I don’t play by anyone else’s rules but my own.” She said as she walked up to the girl, getting as close as she could within a safe distance. Lifting up the goopy mystery meat, she held it up next to her face. ”I don’t even know what this was, maybe a little bunny?” Making the meat ‘hop’ she chuckled, ”Hop, hop, hop…but you do know that its already dead right? Plus, judging by our cooks…it was probably dead when they found it by the side of the road, so whats the harm? It’s all part of the natural order. The animal died by something else, we cooked it, and now we get to play with it. It’s all apart of the game of life. And now, you get to make it into a hat.”
Moving as quickly as she could, she darted at the girl, jumping on a chair, reaching out and placing the meat on top of the girls head, in one swift movement. Trying to make a quick exit, Ella forgot she was on a chair in the middle of a food fight. Sliding the chair a bit, the bottom hit a pile of mashed potatoes, throwing the girl forward onto the ground. Now laying on her back, she was an open target for the other girl.

Sam’s lips couldn’t help twitching as Ella talked, but her smile was almost instantly replaced by one of digust as the other girl waved the goopy meat in front of her face.
“Oh, that is disgusting” she commented, screwing up her nose. She snorted as Ella said it was all part of the natural order and rolled her eyes, her sense of humor fading and immediately turning into smart-ass preacher mode.
“Well, that’s ignorance if I’ve ever heard it. You really think that animal died of ‘something else’, as you so eloquently put it? Let me tell you the real facts; thousands of animals die every day in meat factories just for the sake of man’s petty greed. We promote the unnecessary murder and torture of animals when we can all easily live off of a plant-based diet. Humans eat meat for nothing more than personal satisfaction. It’s disgusting and selfish. And the fact that you would even say ‘oh, it’s already dead’ just proves how people like yourself are so brainwashed that they just accept every messed up, unethical thing society shoves down their throats, because there’s nothing we can do about it, right? Wrong! Let me tell you…”
Whenever Sam got started on a subject she had strong opinions about, it was almost impossible to get her to shut up. However, she did shut up when Ella suddenly darted towards her and dumped the meat on her head. Sam never squealed, but this time she did, throwing the meat as if it burnt towards Ella, who was now lying on her back on the floor. She grinned as she saw the weak position the other girl was in and grabbed a bottle of ketchup. She ran over to her, ketchup in hand, and sat on her legs, ensuring she wouldn’t be able to stand up again. She held her arm outstretched towards the other girl’s face, squeezing the bottle slightly. A few drops of ketchup fell on her face.
“That's it. Now you have to apologize to this poor dead animal for making fun of it's untimely death” Sam teased, grimacing as she took the piece of meat by the tips of her fingers and hovered it over Ella's face with her free hand, at the same time squeezing a few more drops out of the ketchup bottle.

She should have known better. She hadn’t paid attention to what the other girl was saying, she really didn’t care. All she knew was meat was good for you and it tasted yummy, that’s all that mattered. She didn’t care how it got from the animal to the plate, and she didn’t want to know.
She knew that she should have moved quicker than she did in attempt to get up, but soon it was too late as the other girl was sitting on top of her. Wiggling as much as she could, she knew that there was no escape. Feeling a few drips of ketchup on her, she shrieked as if it was her own blood, but froze as the other girl spoke. “That's it. Now you have to apologize to this poor dead animal for making fun of it's untimely death” . Was she serious? There was no way that Ella was going to apologize to a piece of meat, that was just absurd. Instead she had a better idea. Sniffling, she began to tear up and make a whole hearted apology. ”Oh dear piece of meat. I’m sooooooo sorry that you are not being eaten by a starving child in West Africa. I’m soooooooo sorry that you are not being cooked in a five star restaurant with all the special spices to make you taste oh so delicious. Dear piece of meat, I’m sooooooo sorry that you had to be half cooked in this piece of a dump kitchen, but more importantly I am glad that you are here to torment this girl holding you.”
Smirking at the girl on top of her, Ella was pleased. She was such a smart ass, she didn’t really care about a whole lot. Lifting her head slightly she took a bite of the meat and licked some of the ketchup. ”Hmm, that’s not too bad with the ketchup, hey look I’m in PETA now. People eating tasty animals, although I wouldn’t really consider this tasty, only edible….kinda.”
